Kruger, South Africa

South Africa, simply amazing.

Muxe in the rear view mirror here was our safari guide, and Hendry the animal tracker. Muxe has been at Kruger for more than 16 years, starting out as a tracker too. Formal guide qualifications are expensive and although employers assist, it’s a long process taking many years.

Muxe doesn’t carry a rifle, even when tracking on foot. He believes that if you can read the behaviour of the animals and respect them, they will respect you in return and you will be safe.

It hasn’t always been this way, and he told us of a time when he was less experienced, tracking on foot and came across 6 lions from a pride who were unfamiliar with humans. They surrounded him and he had difficulty getting help on the radio. Eventually it arrived, but not before he genuinely thought he was going to die. He nearly quit after this, but the draw of the wild was too strong. Lucky for us, because these two are the kindest people who worked together to give us a wonderful Kruger experience.
